Speed matters most when a customer is comparing options, stuck before converting, or worried about a policy. AI can answer the obvious question immediately while collecting enough context for a person to help faster.
Strong handoff rules are the difference between automation and frustration. Escalate on low confidence, refund anger, VIP status, sensitive data, and repeated clarification loops.
Track response time, resolution rate, conversion assists, and CSAT together. A fast answer that hurts trust is not a win.
